Sweetgrass and Cedar are the two main plants used by the ancient Indians along with Sage and Tobacco. Fragrant Bison was called Mother Earth's sacred hair, which was braided into braids and then dried. Dried braids were burned before various rites or ceremonies. This smoke was believed to purify the spirit.
Cedar, a particularly fragrant tree, was also favored and used in Native American rituals. Its smoke summoned good spirits and removed accumulated negative energies.
